2016 Honda CivicIt’s hard to overstate the benefits of owning a fuel-efficient car, but we often end up overlooking the basics in today’s market of flashy features and special offers. To help you get a handle on the essentials, we’ve taken a close look at how the 2016 Subaru Impreza mpg ratings compare to that of the 2016 Honda Civic. You may already know that Honda has a reputation for manufacturing some of the most efficient small cars available today, and the Civic more than lives up to this promise.

Efficiency by the Numbers

Potential buyers often appreciate the 2016 Impreza’s relatively low starting price, but it’s clear from the data that you’ll soon be spending your savings on gas! Although the Subaru Impreza doesn’t put up terrible numbers, its EPA-estimated mileage ratings look lackluster when compared to the ratings received by the 2016 Honda Civic. In city driving scenarios, the Impreza only gets 25 mpg; its competitor, the Civic, gets an EPA-estimated 31 city mpg LX and EX models equipped with a CVT.* On the highway, the difference between these two cars is just as pronounced. The Impreza gets 34 highway mpg while Civic LX and EX CVT models get an EPA-estimated 41 highway mpg!*

Engine Performance

One common assumption is that great mpg is only possible when engine power and performance are limited to a minimum, but that’s not true at all for the Honda Civic. The Civic is capable of generating a respectable 158 hp, which means that it’s even more powerful than the less-efficient Subaru—which only gets 148 hp. Additionally, if you’re looking for more power, the EX-T, EX-L, and Touring trims of the Honda can be equipped with a DOHC  engine that gets up to 174 hp!

The Civic’s 2.0L I4 engine is similar to the Impreza’s  2.0L H4 drivetrain, but the Civic comes standard with an automatic transmission, while you’ll have to pay to upgrade to an automatic trasmission in the Impreza!
