In the automotive market, the majority of minivan drivers purchase their vans to accommodate seating needs for family members. For families on a budget, cost savings are a big deal, and saving money at the gas pump can be a rare bonus when you’re driving a van.
Consumers shopping for a minivan and concerned about fuel economy may wonder how the 2016 Toyota Sienna mpg measures up against the competition. Does the Sienna excel in terms of fuel efficiency, or does a rival vehicle like the 2016 Honda Odyssey deliver better gas mileage?
Continue reading, and we’ll compare the fuel economy achievements of these two popular minivan models.
When it comes to fuel efficiency, the Honda Odyssey has the Toyota Sienna beat.
Odyssey models achieve gas mileage of an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 22 combined mpg.* By comparison, Sienna models achieve only 18 city mpg, 25 highway mpg, and 21 combined mpg.
The Odyssey also offers Variable Cylinder Management as a standard feature in each model. This feature bolsters fuel efficiency by shutting down one bank of cylinders within the engine during certain driving conditions. Such a system is not offered onboard the Toyota Sienna models.
The Odyssey further offers a 21-gallon tank versus only 20 gallons in the Sienna, which enables drivers to travel farther between gas fill-ups.
In terms of engine offerings, the 3.5L V6 engine beneath the hood of the Odyssey generates 250 lb-ft of torque, while the Sienna’s 3.5L V6 engine produces just 245 lb-ft of torque.
