Although we’re sure that there are more automakers and more features about to be named as “Advanced Technology Features” by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, we’re proud to say that the Honda rearview camera system is the first such feature to earn that designation, and you can find it on practically every new Honda model.

As part of Honda’s commitment to updating standard features on their vehicles, they have given models like the 2014 Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot, and more a standard rearview camera system alongside technology like Bluetooth HandsFreeLink for phone and audio and Honda’s advanced i-MID infotainment system. We’ve always said that these packages boosted safety, and we’re glad that the automaker is getting the recognition they deserve.

What’s an Advanced Technology Feature?

As part of the NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings program, also referred to as NCAP or the New Car Assessment Program, the assessment agency has recognized Honda’s efforts in improved driver visibility thanks to the rearview cameras that are now coming standard on the majority of new models. These are the first vehicles in the industry to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Transportation for meeting their Advanced Technology Feature performance requirements.

Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda, explained the implementation of the new technology, saying “Rearview cameras are an integral part of Honda’s approach to enhance driver visibility. By the 2015 model year all Honda models will have rearview cameras standard on all models.”

The addition of rearview camera systems to the list of recommended Advanced Technology Features was to improve overall crash safety and avoidance, alongside such features as Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) systems (which many drivers can find on a variety of Honda vehicles).
